Description:

This is a first year graduate MSc course and it is intended to be an orientation and an introductory course. It is intended for MSc students coming from a plurality of backgrounds including computer science and electrical engineering. It is assumed that the students may have different levels of knowledge and may come from national as well international institutions. More specifically, the intention of the course is to describe in general terms what is computer engineering and to provide more detailed information on the specific interests of the groups that give education and perform research pertinent to computer engineering MSc program. In particular, the computer engineering components (tools, hardware, and software) are described. It is assumed that the student has no prior knowledge of the subjects. This makes the course also an introduction to the field terminology and current trends. Regarding computer aided tools, this course introduces the topics of logic synthesis, physical design, and testing. All the tools necessary to build computing systems are presented. Regarding computer hardware, the course introduces the main topics of, computer architecture, implementation and realisation. Finally, regarding the system software the topics of operating systems and compilers are introduced.
